Substance dependency is the “the disease of denial “and “a family disease” due to the fact that it is commonplace for the abuser to deny the severity of his/her behavior of drinking or using of drugs despite all obvious indicators that there are significant negative consequences occurring in their lives. This behavior is also negatively affecting the lives of those people significant in their life. There is age-old stigma attached to substance dependency that a person’s drinking or drug use is just a matter of willpower and if they really wanted to they could just stop. Unfortunately this is medically not the case and why it is a disease. They have lost their ability to moderate or stop their use.

Substance dependency is a physical and psychological need to use alcohol or other drugs that doesn’t go away even when use causes negative consequences. It is a primary, chronic, progressive and can be fatal. Genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influence its development and manifestations.
